When you come to Barcelona one of the first things you notice when looking at the skyline is the huge tower that is dominating the horizon –the Torre Agbar or the Agbar tower. This impressive building is located in the Poblenou neighbourhood of Barcelona yet it is visible from all over the city due to its impressive height of 145 m and 50693 m2 inside. The tower got its name from its owner, the internationally operating Agbar group. It was build by the French architect Jean Nouvel and officially opened by the Spanish King in September 2005.
The architecture tries to do justice to Barcelona’s and particularly Gaudi’s legacy of impressive artwork and constructions and does so well. Its shape that has been inspired by the Montserrat Mountain that is close to Barcelona tries to portray a geyser; this objective comes across in particular when looking at the tower at night when the lights are turned on and illuminate the building through an interplay of more than 16 Million colours. The building has more than 4500 luminous devices that use LED technology and that can light independently.
