Joan Miro Foundation
Tuesday, 20 July 2010 10:36
Opened to the public in 1975 the foundation was intended to showcase the world famous artist’s work as well as enable contemporary artists to display their art. Until today the Joan Miró foundation remains a major reference point in the international art circuit.
The surrealist artist was born in 1893 and first belonged to the Generation 27 that was a group of Spanish poets, artists, writers, etc. and they developed their style especially due to the repression under the Franco regime. Many of the members of this group were either murdered or had to flee the country and Joan Miró was among the exiles.
However, he continued to work and develop his style further and he therefore was the first to use the automatic drawing technique that remarked the beginning of the surrealist movement.
The Fundació now houses a collection of more than 225 paintings, 125 sculptures, thousands of Miró’s drawings and all of his graphic work.
