Festa Major de Gracia

festa major de graciaEvery year in August the famous neighbourhood festival Festa Major de Gracia takes place in this district of Barcelona. It is a huge event for the barrio of Gracia that used to be an individual village and that was later connected to the city of Barcelona. The celebration usually lasts one week and is very famous and popular throughout all of Catalonia that leads to thousands of people coming every year to watch and to be a part of this extraordinary festival. Throughout the neighbourhood there are decorations, food stalls, music, performances, craft stands, and in the main squares such as Plaza del Sol and Plaza Rius i Taulet live concerts are held of different types of music (jazz, classic, rock…). The main attraction of the fiesta is however, the way the neighbours decorate their streets. It is a competition between the neighbouring streets whoever decorates theirs best and most creative.

The residents are allowed to use all sorts of household objects, paint, recyclable materials such as bottles, paper, car tires, etc…and it is astonishing with what kind of decorations they come up. The competition continues throughout the week and the winning street is announced at the end of the festival. This year there were once again spectacular decorations, for example a comic themed street that had painted real life size comic heroes such as Supermen, Spiderman, Hulk and so on and they were placed everywhere in the street and visitors felt as if they had fallen into a comic book. Another street had used bottles, cups, paper and lots of paint to decorate their road in a Moula Rouge themed area and yet another one used old wooden fruit and vegetable boxes to create a gigantic bee nest in which they showed scenes of the movie Avatar on a huge flat screen.
There were many more fantastic things to be seen this year and this keeps repeating itself every year with more and more creative ideas and spectacular decorations that can even be considered fantastic and impressive artwork. No wonder that thousands of people from all over Catalonia come every to become a spectator and if you happen to be in Barcelona during the time of the festival you simply cannot miss out on it.
