Santa Maria del Mar

Tuesday, 03 August 2010 06:00

Santa Maria del MarSanta Maria del Mar is a wonderful Catalan Gothic church that lies in the heart of the Ribera district of Barcelona and that has a very long history with it being mentioned for the first time in 998 in official documents. The building as we can see it today has been constructed between 1329 and 1383 and was initiated by the canon Bernat Llull.
Its look from the outside appears massive and impressive however, the narrow streets of the Ribera district make it difficult to get a real feeling for the building. The interior as opposed to the exterior seems spacious and is full of light, which is surprising when comparing this impression to the one you obtain from the outside.
However, due to a fire in 1936 most of the artwork that used to be inside the church has been destroyed back then and leaves the interior rather empty. Luckily, some of the impressive stained-glass works have survived though and can still be seen in the building.
Also, it is worth mentioning that the church is the background setting for the famous and bestselling book La Catedral del Mar by Ildefonso Falcones (2006). Furthermore, it is mentioned in the novel El juego del ángel by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.

Learning Spanish in Barcelona

Monday, 02 August 2010 14:34

Spanish FlagIf you want to learn Spanish Barcelona -even though it is the the capital of Catalonia with its own Catalan language-  is a wonderful place to do so as it offers many fantastic opportunities. There are dozens of qualified language schools in the city that offer internationally certified quality teaching and of course everybody in Barcelona speaks Spanish as well even though Catalan is the official language.
However, the offer of different courses in Barcelona might be overwhelming at first, so what should you look for in a language school?

First of all, it is important that the classes are not too large and a maximum of 10 people should be guaranteed by to school to ensure that you get enough attention from the teacher.

Also, the location is important. Do you want to be close to the beach or in the center of the city? Look at the map to find out where the various schools are situated and then decide which ones suit your preferences best.

The Magic Fountain

Wednesday, 28 July 2010 06:00

Magic fountainBarcelona has a alot to offer, the city has a large number of beautiful parks and museums to visit, and many stores to go for shopping. Another great feature of this city is The Magic Fountain, which is definitely worth seeing when visiting Barcelona.

The Magic Fountain was built for the Internaitonal Exposition of 1929, and was designed by the engineer Carles Buigas i Sans. The project consisted not only of the fountain itself but several cascades and smaller fountains along the way between the Palau Nacional, which is the city´s main exhibition center and Placa Espanya. The Magic Fountain ended up in a bad state as the years went by but for the Olympic games in 1992, a restoration was taken place of it which made the fountain active, once again.

During the evenings, depending on the season, the fountain is active and offers an incredible show with light, water and music, attracting hundreds of visitors each night. In the same time as the show, the Palau National is illuminated, giving a beautiful background and a splendid experience.
